| Sod
is a living plant that requires ground contact and moisture
to survive, and should be installed as soon as possible
after delivery. |
Begin
by installing sod along the longest and straight edges
such as a driveway or sidewalk. If there is no straight
border, stretch a string the length of the longest axis
and use this as a guide for the first row.
Push
edges and ends tightly against each other without stretching.
Avoid gaps or overlaps.
Stagger
or alternate the joints (seams) in each row like a brick
pattern.
Sod
may be cut with a sharp knife to conform.
Avoid
leaving small strips at the outer edges, as they will
not retain moisture.
To
avoid indentations or air pockets avoid walking or kneeling
on the turf while it is being installed or just after
watering.
| Initial
watering |
| Newly
planted sod needs to be watered more frequently for short
periods during the first two-three weeks, or until sod is
established. |
Water
within 30 minutes of installation.
Water
4 times daily in the summer (above 90) and two times daily
below 90.
Soak
the sod enough to keep the top three inches of soil along
with the layer of sod contantly wet, but DO NOT allow
water to stand for long periods of time.
When
rooting has sufficiently developed to prevent the sod
from being pulled from the soil when you tug on it (about
7-10 days) gradually increase the run time and decrease
the frequency as grass gets established.
After
about 21 days, water 2-3 times a week in the summer and
every 3-14 days in the winter.
Keep
foot and pet traffic off the new sod for three weeks to
avoid causing indentations.
| Initial
Mowing |
| The
first mowing can be done when the sod has developed a sufficient
root system, usually two weeks after installation. |
Cut
no more than 1/3 of the grass blade in any one mowing.
Use
sharp mower blades.
Mow
when grass is dry. You must wait for the grass to dry
out. Mowing when the sod is wet will cause indentations
in the lawn.
| Fertilizing |
Do not
fertilize until after the sod has taken root.
